GM Magnus Carlsen’s dramatic first appearance at the 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad won’t be forgotten anytime soon. After arriving late on a bike, fearing he’d lost by default, he made it just in time to win with a checkmate. Meanwhile, GM Fabiano Caruana moved up to world number two as Team U.S.A. continued their dominance. On the other hand, 2700+ rated GMs Anish Giri and Vincent Keymer were upset, with the Netherlands and Germany losing to Italy and Lithuania.
In the Women’s 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad, underdog teams held their ground against top seeds. Romania, Greece, Argentina, and Slovenia drew against Georgia, Poland, Azerbaijan, and Germany. In a surprise result, Uzbekistan edged out Hungary 2.5-1.5.
Round 4 of the 2024 FIDE Chess Olympiad takes place on Saturday, September 14, at 9 a.m. ET / 15:00 CEST / 6:30 p.m. IST.
